"For most of history, Anonymous was a woman."
- Virginia Woolf
Lauren Martin is the founder and sole operator of Words Of Women. Founded in 2015, she began the account as a way to battle her anxities, fears and disillusion of the female state.
While trying to find quotes, she realized that 98% of all sayings and proverbs were from men.
Where were all the women? Didn't women have antidotes and advice? Didn't women have something to say?
Unfortuantely, for most of history, men did not care to write down the sayings and opinoins of women. For most of history, women's accomplishements weren't recorded.
This is where Words of Women began.
Two years later, the account represents so much more than just quotes by women. A place for women to feel inspired, rejuvenated and heard, it’s become a meeting place of the minds.
By shining a spotlight on women's voices, she's also shone a spotlight on the female state -- the idea that "all women feel this too".
Women all over the world find compassion and understanding in the Words of Women account. In a world full of Instagram models, upsetting political news and aggressive marketing aimed at making women feel awful about themselves, Words of Women provides a safe haven -- a place to breath.
There's no political news, no ads, no man shaming. Just uplifting, inspiring and mentally stimulating posts to get you through the day and to your best self.
In order to keep Words of Women running, I need some help from all of you. If you can spare just $5 - $10 it can cover the costs of website hosting fees and the newsletter campaign monthly charges.
Thank you all so much for your continued support of Words of Women.
