Pohnpei School Supplies

Imagine high school math with no calculators, no graphing paper, and not enough desks for each student. This is the reality at PICS, the public high school where I teach in Pohnpei, FSM. We do not have enough textbooks for each student, so the books stay in the classroom. This makes homework assignments virtually impossible to assign. (Although I would have greatly appreciated this as a high school senior, I see things a little differently when trying to get 115 students to pass a college entrance exam!)
One of the best tools I used as a student was my senior calculus math journal. (Shout out to Mrs. Goodman for this epic idea!) We wrote a journal entry for each new concept that we learned in class. This allowed us to explain what we learned in our own words, and the journals were great for review!
This year, my goal is to provide the following supplies for each of my 115 senior Algebra II students:
1. Composition Notebooks for our Math Journals
2. Calculators
I promise to each and every donor e-mails with pictures and a stories of the projects that we work on this year in class. This way you can see exactly how your donation was used and hopefully some big smiles on the faces of my students!
