Preserve the memory of Berkeley's Hateman

Donation protected

Hateman of Berkeley (formerly known as Mark Hawthorne) lived from 1936 to 2017. He demonstrated his own philosophy by acknowledging pals and strangers alike with an introductory, “I hate you!” He had the courage to break conventions in many ways, one of which was encouraging every person he met to acknowledge their innermost feelings and to express them verbally, in hopes of preventing physical conflict.

He also taught countless numbers another unusual practice called "pushing." This method was done by two people with conflicting needs, patiently leaning against one another, until one of them conceded.

Hateman spent 37 years camping outdoors, in or around People's Park in Berkeley. He became a nucleus for some who may have been either lost or searching for an alternate way of life. No matter what type of interaction people had with Hateman, whether brief or longterm, caring for others was important to him.

Please help us achieve our goals, which are the following:

• Digitalize the many photographs and audio-visual recordings of Hateman to make them accessible for all.

• Preserve his writings and published material about Hateman, to make them accessible for all.

• Set up a tangible memorial in Berkeley, honoring Hateman along with his unique beliefs and methods.

By Prudence Hawthorne (aka Briar and Slicker, Hateman's sister and nephew)

***SPECiAL HOMEMADE BUTTON (made exclusively by Zizi Hawthorne, Hateman's daughter) will be mailed to every person who donates.
