Rally for Wren

I invite you to meet Wren!  Not only is Wren one of my son’s best friends who has brightened his life over the past year, but she has also brightened the lives of everyone who is lucky enough to meet her.  She is a bubbly, spunky girl with a quiet charm.  Her bright blue eyes show her whimsical side one moment and her compassionate side the next.  Those blue eyes pull at the heart strings of Wren’s parents, who struggled for 7 years with infertility before they were finally pregnant with Wren.  Wren’s family already believes she is such a miracle.

Wren will be turning 3 on Christmas day this year.  Although it doesn’t seem too long from now it will seem like an eternity for Wren’s family.  This past June Wren’s mother, Brigit, found a lump protruding from Wren’s abdomen.  Within 24 hours she heard the unthinkable word “tumor” and waited another excruciating 72 hours to hear the horrific word “Cancer”.  A whirlwind of painful emotions were experienced by this family in the 2 weeks following this diagnosis.  Wren underwent a successful yet tough surgery to remove the tumor (which has since been diagnosed as a Wilms Tumor), kidney, and part of her adrenal gland.  A port was placed in her chest for her weekly chemotherapy treatments that will take place over the next 5 months. The family is now bracing to see how well she handles the chemotherapy.

In a matter of a month this child has taught her family even more about the precious gift of life and what’s really important.  But what I don’t think the family realizes is the impact Wren has had on everyone around them. It amazes me how they are taking something like cancer and finding positive strength from it.  I appreciate my blessings more and don’t dwell on the unimportant “stuff” in life.  I hug my sons a little more each day.  I call my friends and family a bit more each week.  Wren truly is a miracle.

If you have been lucky to have met this family you already understand my words and know how giving, modest, and bighearted this family is.  The next 5 months will be hard for them.  Brigit works from home and will probably need to lighten her work load while Ryan works away from home full time.  Unfortunately their insurance will not cover close to what they will need for Wren’s surgery, treatments, and recovery.  Now it’s my turn from one mother to another to thank Brigit, Wren and Ryan for teaching me how to appreciate life more and show them that their life does not need to change drastically because of this.  I am asking all of you who have been impacted by this family and/or their story to help them keep their life as unchanged as possible through this painful journey.  A little help can go a long way!

Written with love,
Johnny’s mom
