Wrexham Miners Project

Located on the Maesgwyn Road in Wrexham, the Miners Rescue Station was officially opened in 1913 for the purpose of training mines rescue teams for the whole of the North East Wales Coalfield. This once abandoned building has gradually been brought back to life by the Wrexham Miners Project for the community. The entrance now houses a unique commemorative wall for the 266 miners who lost their lives in the 1934 Gresford Disaster. Despite our efforts, the building remains on Cadw’s 'Listed Building at Risk’ register, and needs urgent work to fully restore it.

Despite these limitations, we currently have one small classroom from where our volunteers provide numerous arts and crafts sessions for the community, ranging from disadvantaged young children to adults with learning difficulties and dementia. We also run a popular Rescue Café, which is a warm meeting venue for locals, visitors and football fans before the matches at the nearby Racecourse Ground, home of Wrexham AFC.

With your support, our Restoration Project will not only save this important building, but also provide a new coal mining museum, an arts gallery and modern spaces for our volunteers to expand our current core activities.

You are all welcome to visit us at the Rescue Café, where you can share your family’s memories of the coal mining past with the ex-miners who frequent it over a cup of tea. Otherwise, you can visit us at www.wrexhamminersproject.co.uk or contact us at [email redacted].uk
