Personal Story
Twenty-seven-year old's don't usually wake up one day and decide to start a sprinting career. Especially with their eyes set on making the Olympics.
My name is Nick Laporte and I am that exception. My entire life has been dedicated to the sport of hockey. It has taken me all over the world and has introduced me to some of the greatest people. After finishing my junior career in my home town of North Bay, I went on to play in Upstate New York for the 1000 Island Privateers of the FHL. From there I went to Colorado where I made the CHL's Denver Cutthroats as a walk on (Affiliate of the NHL Colorado Avalanche and AHL Lake Erie Monsters). The following season I moved to Czech Republic to play for SHK Hodonin. I have taken the past few seasons off but have remained in top shape.
In the fall of 2016 I began training for something different, when I joined the University of Calgary track team. The main reason for joining was to be able to train with my friend Mariano Ezeta. He was a rising star in the track and field world and had been battling leukemia for a year and a half. We trained together as much as possible, while he was in and out of the hospital getting treatment. We always talked about making the Olympics together and ramping up our workouts as soon as he got healthy. Mariano passed away in May of this year. He was only 23 years old. The last thing he said to me was "I better see you at the next Olympics". That was the moment I realized that I was running for both of us now and that I was going to dedicate my life to achieving that goal.
I will begin competing during the indoor season starting in November. I will compete next spring in as many races as possible, leading up to the 2018 Track and Field Championships in Ottawa next summer.
Making the Canadian National Sprinting team is the bigger picture. The standard time for consideration is 10.15 in the 100m. My best time is 10.50 seconds. There is plenty of room to improve on technique and speed as I am still brand new to the sport.
I recently met with former Olympian and world champion Ben Johnson who has agreed to coach me full-time. This is the opportunity of a life time. Training will be 6 days a week, 4-6 hours a day, at York University.
All of the money raised from this campaign will go towards rent, coaching, training facilities, medical (including physiotherapy, chiropractor, acupuncture) nutritionalist, travel expenses and meets, as well as training gear.
Thank you to all contributors and know that you are now part of my team! Looking forward to achieving greatness and sharing it with all of you.
