The funds raised through this go fund me page support expanding the number of books at the Wusi Primary School Library and classrooms in Taita Hills Kenya. Educational opportunities such as access to a library with a variety of books are critical components in early education. As an elementary school student I was a voracious reader and I find it hard to imagine not having access to a wide range of books as a child. My goal is to help the children in this community have access to more books in their school library, and I am hoping you will help me reach this goal.
My name is Ethan King. I am a ninth grader at Steller Secondary School in Anchorage, Alaska. My school has a graduation requirement of undertaking a community service project and I have chosen to assist the Wusi Primary school as my project. One of the main reasons I have chosen this as my project is because of the connection my family has to this area of Kenya. My father lived there with a host family over 20 years ago in 1995. He has remained in touch with his host brother, Franklin, who now has a family of his own including three children who attend the Wusi Primary School. Franklin and his wife Grace invited our family to come visit them in Kenya. We will have the opportunity to travel to visit them in Taita Hills in May of 2019. Over the course of our communications with Franklin and the school principal, we have learned that the local school, which serves over 800 students between the ages of 4 -14, would like to expand their tiny library so that they can provide more books for the students. I am very thankful for the opportunity to make a difference. All contributions will be used to expand educational opportunities and school infrastructure improvements at Wusi Primary and will have a lasting impact for the children in this community.
Here is some information we received from our partners at the Wusi Primary school about what different funding levels would provide to the project:
$5 will buy 8 general reading books for the library
$10 will buy 4 English readers for Grades 5-6
$25 will buy 15 locally printed Swahili readers for Graders 4-8
$100 will buy science or social studies books for a classroom
Please join me in supporting this project's goal of assisting the Wusi Primary School in expanding their meager library!
