Wuurn of Kanak - LandBack!

Donation protected
This landback initiative, Wuurn Of Kanak is an exercise of sovereign strength and self determination to regenerate land and waters through native plants and bush medicine gardens, create a seed library, and nurture and protect the existing ancestor trees and cultural landscapes surrounding.

This initiative will be led by Arika Waulu, a sovereign mother of the LGBTQ families and cousin to most of so-called southern victoria, australia. Arika will be working with other strong, sovereign community activators, land defenders, grandmothers, mothers, aunties, cousins and a trusted circle of allies, advisors and stakeholders.

The initiative aims to take its time in building a self-sustainable base over three years before launching an official opening for residencies for land and water regeneration, seed library and cultural practices.

Who are we

Ngata/Hi everyone, I’m a Gunditjmara Sovereign of the DjapWurrung, KeerayWurrung, Peek Wurrung, Dhauwurd Wurrung and of Gunnai countries of southern victoria, so called australia. I have had the honour of growing up culturally on country within blak communities where I have had important knowledge of land, water, animals, customs, ceremony, language and responsibilities passed onto me.  My morals and ethics have allowed me to successfully activate peoples in areas of social, cultural and food justice for the past 14 years through my artworks, curation, producing and organising, previous to that an intense cultural learning and community nurturing under the wings of my strong family and communities. I have been raised with values to care for country, practice self-determination through being self initiated free from government funding and to look after vulnerable ones.

Who is this for

This LandBack initiative has been in drafting mode since breaking my spine four years back and had planned to publish it early 2021 when I will receive some compensation to financially contribute to the ten year plan. Given the current political climate, I've come to realise my DjapWurrung peoples particularly us women and non binaries are in urgent need of independent safe space to carry out mourning ceremonies and cultural business.

What we are going to do

Wuurn Of Kanak - House of Digging Stick initiative will be the first sovereign landback initiative owned and co-managed by Koolyn/blackfulla women and non-binaries. This initiative supports the continuation of local cultural practices using a mixture of pre-colonial permaculture methods to remedy land and waters.

It aims to create a functioning base over the next three years, first regenerating the land for the well-being of peoples, land, waters and totems simultaneously, whilst actively developing community-based programs that encourage and hold space for decolonising practices, conversations, knowledge-sharing, to grow native food and bush medicine, and to start a seed saving library.

There is a greater aim to template this initiative to share to trusted sovereigns who wish to create their own LandBack initiative on their country. I do not advise anyone who is not culturally connected to their communities to attempt LandBack initiatives.

Challenges

Properties are really expensive, initiative will not be possible without hitting our minimum $200,000 target.

Land sale availability on country is low and could make it more difficult to find the right land for the right price.

Possible pandemic restrictions may slow down purchasing and construction.

Essentials Goal $200,000

This will help us achieve our 3 year plan to set-up the base and give us the ability to survey cultural landscapes,  documentation of climate, seasons, plants and animals, build infrastructure and gardens, mourning and cleansing ceremonies for 200+ years of desecration.

This is an example of what we can get at this price:

9.33 ha

$175,000 - $185,000

Ideal Goal: $5,000,000

This will allow the initiative to have access to huge land that can act as a sovereign village.
