Arthur’s Story

Donation protected

Arthur Morgan was born on 22nd December 2020. And despite arriving 6 weeks prematurely, he needed no special care support and was a happy, healthy baby boy who completed Reece and Rosie’s family, the son they always dreamt of having, joining them and their daughter, Nancy.

Over the coming months, it became apparent that Arthur wasn’t hitting the same milestones as other babies and concerned, Rosie took him to their GP where they were advised to take him to A&E.
Arthur was admitted for tests and the doctors at Lewisham Hospital expressed their concern as Arthur was displaying signs of a serious condition.

He was transferred to the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London where tests confirmed the doctors fears that Arthur has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1).

Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare neuromuscular disorder that results in the loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting. Overall, about 68% of children with SMA type 1 die before their second birthday.

Currently there is no cure for SMA but in the last two years treatments have been developed that can prolong a child’s life.

Just last month, a one off drug, Zolgensma, was approved by NICE for use in the UK and we are praying that Arthur is eligible for this treatment as it provides something that we need right now, it provides hope!

Arthur has been in hospital since the day he went to A&E and Reece and Rosie have been taking it turns to be with him as only one parent is allowed at a time due to Covid restrictions but also because they have their daughter Nancy to care for at home too.

This situation, as you can imagine, is extremely difficult for them. And it is likely Arthur will spend a great deal of time in and out of hospital.

Being told that your precious baby boy may not live to see his second or even first birthday, is something no parent should ever have to hear but watching how Reece and Rosie have dealt with this situation has filled our family with pride at what a fantastic job they are doing and how strong they are being. What we are hoping to do is raise enough money so as Reece and Rosie can continue to concentrate on Arthur’s fight and bringing up Nancy without having these money worries looming over them. We would love to ease the financial pressure especially with Reece being self employed and uncertainty over when Rosie can go back to work.

We are very aware that many people are in financial difficulties at the moment and completely understand if you are unable to donate but if you could keep Arthur in your thoughts, pray for him and share this page and his story we would be forever grateful.

Thank you.
