Help my mom beat cancer

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

Where to even start… August 30th will forever be the worst day of my life: the day we found out that my mom has cancer.

To give a little bit of background, we are from Mexico, and I have lived in Canada for 9 years. My mom arrived to Canada in June to come visit me for the summer. She’s always been very healthy - she doesn’t really have any medical history, doesn’t take any medications, is super fit, eats healthy, doesn’t smoke, doesn’t really drink, etc. You would never guess her age if you see her.

Beginning of July, she started feeling very sick and turned out she had a kidney stone and a kidney infection. She took antibiotics and was fine… at least that’s what we thought…

For a few weeks in August, my mom was complaining of feeling very tired, and we just thought it was maybe lack of sleep or something simple. However, August 28 she started peeing blood. We went to Urgent Care, and they didn’t fully know what was causing it… X-rays looked fine, and we needed to wait for urine cultures to confirm an infection. The doctor also sent a requisition to get an ultrasound done… my mom got that done the next day. On Friday, August 30th, we went to the doctor to review results. I was so convinced it was just going to be an infection or another kidney stone… turns out, it wasn’t. The ultrasound showed a 5-6 cm mass in her right kidney suspicious of either urothelial carcinoma or renal carcinoma. The next step was an urgent CT scan to confirm. However, it was a Friday before a long weekend, so we were not going to know until the following week. On Sunday, Sept 1, my mom started feeling worse and peeing more blood. We went to emergency, and thankfully she got the CT scan done and the ER doctor had a consultation with the urologist. The CT scan confirmed cancer, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem like it has spread. Urology deemed that urgent surgery is needed but can be booked as outpatient since she’s still relatively stable (hospital admission and emergency surgery wasn’t needed). So they placed a referral to an urologist to get a surgical plan in place and surgery scheduled. Since it’s not emergency surgery, the travel insurance won’t cover the surgery here in Canada. So, she needs to get it done in Mexico. My mom doesn’t have any insurance coverage there, and our current funds are very limited. My mom works but, in Mexico, there’s no such thing as paid sick leave. I recently graduated university and just started my professional career. My savings are not enough…

If you have had the chance to meet my mom, you know how amazing she is. She doesn’t deserve this, and the last thing I want her to worry about is money. If you know me, you know my mom is my best friend and my absolutely everything. I am asking for support to help us cover the cost for doctor consultations, the surgery, hospital stay, and not working for a few weeks while recovering. Please donate if you are able to and/or share this to help us get to our goal. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has helped us out in any way, shape or form ❤️
