The Mendez Family

In August 2023, Emily was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was found incidentally during an ER visit. The tumor required brain surgery to be removed. The surgery happened Friday, September 29th. She is married to Salvador and they have 3 small children (Layla, Mila, Gabby).

Salvador is spending the majority of his time caring for Emily and their kids in the wake of surgery and impending treatments.  The biopsy of the tumor indicated that it is a glioblastoma.  This form of brain cancer necessitates radiation and chemotherapy.

The treatment plan and outcomes for Emily and her family require travel from the Wenatchee Valley to UW Medical in Seattle.  This is where she had surgery and where her team of doctors are located.  In addition to this team, some of the treatment plan is being outsourced to a team of doctors in close collaboration with her UW team. Her radiation and chemotherapy treatments are being completed in Moses Lake.  While closer to home, she has to receive radiation treatments daily for 6 weeks. This will necessitate a substantial amount of travel each day.  Between appointments in Seattle and Moses Lake, the holiday season will be one of a lot of transitions and time spent in the car.

It is important to Emily and Salvador to try and keep as many of the rhythms of their lives as consistent as possible for the sake of their very young kids.  The option of treatment in Moses Lake was appealing as it allows the schooling and familial dynamic to remain as intact as possible.  Emily will be reliant on Salvador for daily transportation and the care of the kiddos throughout her treatment.

As one can imagine, the family is facing some financial hardships.  Emily and Salvador were working hard to save for the purchase of a home.  That savings has been depleted during the last 6 weeks post brain surgery.  Salvador’s primary employment is in construction and as a small independent contractor.  His ability to bid jobs and complete work at this time is very limited given the health situation the family is facing.

It is my hope that we can all rally alongside Emily, Salvador, and their children during this difficult time and show them that they have a tribe of many who want to help shoulder the heavy load they must carry.  Christmas is coming and it is the season of giving.  If you are a person who normally gives during this season, then I humbly ask that you consider this lovely little family as the recipient of your kind generosity.  It will go so far to bless them during their time of need.

I will try and keep you all updated as things progress.

Thanks!
