BRONSON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan community is rallying around a little boy and his father, who were burned in an explosion.

On Saturday afternoon, the boy and his father were working at their home in the Village of Bronson, in Branch County.

The two were on a skid steer when something caused an explosion.

Andy Hemker and his 4-year-old son suffered some significant burns, following that tragic accident, and now the family is asking for prayers in their time of need.

It will be a long road to recovery for 4-year-old Wyatt and his father, Andy.

"His mom stopped in a few minutes after I got to the other house, and said there's been an accident we gotta go," said Hemker's wife Diana.

Diana says Wyatt and Andy were on a skid steer moving a dirt pile.

Diana and their youngest son had just left--they were supposed to be heading to a wedding. But minutes later, Andy's sister Alicia Rose says the skid steer exploded.

"Don't really know what exploded or how it exploded, but it was engulfed in flames," she said. "He threw my nephew out then got himself out and put my nephew out and then called 911."

Both were taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

"Their burn pattern is very similar. a lot of it is neck, back of the head," Alicia said.

Both have some significant burns. Diana says Andy is improving, talking a little, and he still has his sense of humor.

She's now bouncing back in forth between her husband's room, and her son's.

"He's still sedated and intubated right now, so he still has a lot of swelling," Diana said of little Wyatt.

She says they'll need multiple skin graft surgeries.

"It's been tough, so it's been like a roller coaster for both of them cause one would get better and the other would get worse and then they'd switch," Diana said. "And today's a good day cause they're both getting better today."

But in their time of need, she says their community has stepped in, and they're grateful for all of the help.

Wyatt and Andy are expected to be at Bronson Hospital for the next few weeks, possibly a month.
