Freya’s Fight For Life
Freya's world was turned upside down on June 2nd 2024. After a week of battling an unknown illness and countless trips to the doctor and hospital, a critical diagnosis came. Freya had necrotising fasciitis and myosis from an invasive group strep A infection.
A rare combination with a 99.2% fatality rate. Freya defied the odds and became part of the precious 0.8%.
But her fight was far from over. Septic shock, Multiple organ failure, cardiac arrests, kidney failure – Freya endured unimaginable challenges. Clutched to life by machines, she bravely fought on through weeks in the intensive care unit.
A Gruelling but Determined Recovery
Freya's surgeries were extensive. Her arm, ravaged by infection, required emergency amputation. Skin and muscle were removed from her torso, back, and neck in a desperate bid to halt the disease's spread. Major Reconstructive surgery followed, using muscle from her back to fill the gaps and skin stretched to cover the wounds.
The next hurdle is a skin graft scheduled in 3 weeks (x-apple-data-detectors://embedded-result/1033), a complex procedure that will likely be followed by further surgeries for years to come.
Every day presents new challenges – the risk of infection, complications from surgery, and the potential for the illness to spread. The family simply don't know what the future will hold and would like to be as well prepared as possible.
Freya faces a long and difficult recovery. The family’s financial burden is immense. On top of mounting medical bills, there's the loss of income as a consequence of Freya's illness; and the necessary adaptations that they will so desperately need to make her home as comfortable and safe as physically possible. Rehabilitation and equipment are of course another ongoing expense. For example, Freya will require a specific type of electrical wheelchair, car seat etc. In addition, the family will need to fit ramps and adaptions throughout the house to aid this. Only some of the many things that she will require for her recovery.
Freya certainly has a long journey ahead, with more surgeries planned and infections to battle.
Support Freya and her family
Freya’s mothers are overwhelmed with gratitude for the John Radcliffe Hospital for saving their daughter's life. They state:
“Words cannot express how thankful we are to all the medical professionals and their unwavering care, without them, we know she would not be with us today. We have not had the opportunity in speaking with people as we have simply been in survival mode but for those who have shown their support, we thank you and we cannot express how incredibly proud we are of Freya and her fight so far.”
Freya's fight has left the family facing a long road to recovery. The months ahead will require the family to live in the hospital until Freya shows signs of recovery. There will be ongoing medical needs and expenses.
