Sergei Noskov Memorial Fund

Donation protected
On June 18, 2021, we lost Professor Sergei Noskov - our beloved father, husband, friend, colleague and mentor. He was only 46 years old. This memorial fund is aimed at celebrating Sergei’s contributions to science and education, while at the same time providing emotional supports and financial assistance to Sergei's wife Tatiana and their children, Andrei and Katherina.

Sergei was a brilliant scientist, a wonderful teacher and mentor, and a kind and humble professor whose contagious smile, humor, and optimistic nature brightened the day of everyone who met him. He found his home at the University of Calgary (UofC) in 2006, where he joined the Department of Biological Sciences, and later became a full Professor. At UofC, he created a vibrant and active research group that trained many bright young scientists from all around the world.

Sergei’s greatest joy were his two children, Andrei and Katherina, and he talked often with pride about their many academic achievements. The education of his children was of paramount importance for Sergei. His sudden death puts Tatiana, Andrei and Katherina in an uncertain financial situation, since he was the primary provider of the family. Andrei is a third-year student in the Engineering Science Undergraduate Program at the University of Toronto and Katherina plans to pursue a university degree once she finishes high school. Unfortunately, Tatiana’s current income and insurance from Sergei’s passing cannot fully support both children through their undergraduate degrees. Tatiana might also have to take requalification courses for a job that would provide better for her family.

We hope this memorial fund in Sergei’s honor will support his family through their educations and other urgent related expenses and help them get through this challenging time and adapt to a life without Sergei.

We also hope this GoFundMe channel will provide Sergei’s colleagues, students, and friends around the world with the opportunity to pay their tributes to Sergei and leave any kind words of support and memories of Sergei for his family.

In the following, we have provided some photos of Sergei with his family, students, and colleagues along with a few testimonies about Sergei.

From Sergei’s family:

There are no words in this world with which I could express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who, in these difficult days of loss, share our grief and will be beside me and my family, to everyone who supports me at this very difficult time for me and my children, financially and emotionally, everyone who prays for my family, everyone who mourns my loved ones and grieves with us.
-Tatiana Noskova

From Sergei’s group:

Sergei was one of the kindest people we have ever met and working with him was among the most rewarding experiences in our lives. He gave us the freedom, the comfort, and the encouragement to push forward with our research in our own ways, and to learn something new every day. Each of us has a memory in which Sergei has been there for us and has gone out of his way to help us and support us in difficult times. He had so many fun and interesting stories and he could talk for hours on so many fascinating topics. His love for science and his optimism for the future made every conversation with him a joyful and motivational experience. We feel blessed that he was a part of our lives and we will forever mourn his loss. We will carry with us what we learned from him until the end of our days.
- Sergei’s group

“I consider 5 years as a postdoctoral scholar in Sergei’s lab as one of the most joyful times in my scientific career. Sergei and I have been working relentlessly on many difficult projects. When facing challenges and frustrations, Sergei always approached with optimism. His optimism has been contagious to everyone in the team, particularly to me. I owed him a great gratitude for any successes in my career. Being his student, colleague and friend, it is truly an honor for me.”

From Sergei’s collaborators and friends:

"Dear Tanya, Andrei, Katherina,
Sergei was the best of colleagues and friends, full of energy and enthusiasm.  I relished the times when he would stop by the open door of my office on the way to pick up his mail. Always a snippet of news from one of his many projects, or greetings from mutual friends. We did our best to put our heads together on quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics and I know that Sergei’s students are grateful for his mentorship and his firm but warm humanity. I was delighted when Sergei “lent” Andrei to me as a summer student, all the more opportunity to have Sergei drop by!
We miss Sergei terribly, but with the fondest of memories."
- Prof. Dennis Salahub, University of Calgary

"Sergei was a towering presence in all our lives, with his enthusiasm, energy, positive forward-looking attitude in science and many more things. He will be remembered forever."
- Prof. Benoit Roux, University of Chicago

“I have the fondest memories of Sergei over the last nearly twenty years, since our time together in New York. Sergei and I not only shared common interests in science, allowing us to collaborate up until this year, but we also shared the experience of working together as postdocs and breaking away to our independent jobs.  Sergei always helped whenever he was asked, whether it was in research, reviewing papers, seminars or just giving advice. During the most stressful of times I could always rely on Sergei’s boundless energy, even temper and unselfishness.  I cannot escape the memories of bumping into Sergei at meetings, where he would always give me such an enthusiastic and jolly hello, saying it was great to see me, making my day. He was simply the nicest person you could ever meet. It’s a tragedy that such a successful scientist and good friend has been lost to us all.  I wish his family, friends and colleagues my deepest sympathy.”
- Prof. Toby Allen, RMIT

“Sergei Noskov was a wonderful person and passionate scientist who was simply a pleasure to be with as well as to collaborate with on scientific projects.  His contributions in the area of the structure-function of ion transporters, to the field of drug toxicity and in the development of the mathematical models used in computational chemistry and biophysics were highly significant.  These efforts have and will continue to have a positive contribution on the work of scientists in a number of fields. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to interact with him on both personal and professional levels and will greatly miss those interactions going forward.  I can’t imagine the loss his family is feeling, but we hope our support will help carry the family forward.”
- Prof. Alex MacKerell, University of Maryland Baltimore

“Dear Tatiana, Andrei, and Katya,
Please accept our deepest condolences on the tragic and unbelievable loss of your beloved husband and father. Sergei was our closest colleague, collaborator, and dearest friend since he spent his sabbatical year in Maryland in our lab at the NIH in 2013. He was immediately appreciated by all of us as a superb human being and as a brilliant and creative scientist. After the sabbatical, we have been constantly in touch with him, working on many exciting projects of mutual interest and planning many more in the years to come. He was indispensable to us and the whole scientific community. In addition to being an exceptional scientist, Sergei was an outstanding educator and a very supportive individual of many talents. We will miss him dearly as a wonderful person and as a professional of the highest standards and competence.
We are keeping your family in our thoughts and hearts.”
- Tatiana Rostovtseva, David Hoogerheide, and Sergey Bezrukov, NICHD/NIH
