One Job Should Be Enough

Marriott hotel workers in San Jose have been out on strike since October 4th, as negotiations with Marriott failed to move after months at the table. The San Jose Marriott workers are members of UNITE HERE Local 19. Marriott workers are also on strike in San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego, Boston, Detroit, and Hawaii.

UNITE HERE represents more than 20,000 Marriott hotel workers across North America, of whom more than 12,000 have had their contracts expire and are locked in ongoing negotiations. Three of the most crucial points of disagreement include the need for Marriott to be a leader in the hospitality industry – and recognize their role as the largest and most profitable hotel company in the world – and offer workers jobs that are enough for them to live on. Additionally, workers are fighting for improved workplace safety, particularly around unsafe workloads and physical labor created by the so-called ‘Green Choice program’, and pioneering job protections around technology and innovation in the hospitality industry.

As the strike rounds out its second week, strikers are seeking support through Working Partnerships USA’s Union Community Fund, a long operated program for members of participating unions facing hardships and obstacles to success.  South Bay Labor Council is raising money to support the fund as it is a critical resource to the Marriott Strikers.
