The Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. For nearly two decades it has been subject to periodic and indiscriminate shelling by the Israeli regime — which Israeli officials describe as "mowing the grass" — and a needlessly cruel military blockade that has limited the import of food, water, and essential medicines for nearly two decades.
The violence of the Israeli regime has created an enduring humanitarian crisis in which 95% of the water supply in Gaza is unfit for human consumption, where more than half of the population is food insecure, and where the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse. The people of Gaza live in the world's largest open-air prison, in conditions that the United Nations described as "uninhabitable".
The events unfolding in Palestine are the direct consequence of decades of escalating violence against the Palestinian people. On average, a Palestinian has been killed every day this year by the Israeli occupation forces. Theft and demolition of Palestinian homes and properties continues unabated, and illegal settlements continue to expand in direct and brazen violation of international law. The indefinite subjugation of the Palestinian people was never sustainable, and Israel's intransigence and brutality over more than 75 years has generated the violence we now observe.
The current death toll in Gaza now stands at 413, including 78 children, with another 2,300 injured. More than 70,000 people within the Gaza Strip have been displaced from their homes in the last 24 hours.
“When we began asking about the situation inside the hospitals we work with, one person described it as a slaughterhouse,” said Mahmoud Shalabi of Medical Aid for Palestinians, who is overseeing support to hospitals across the Gaza Strip.
“There were bodies laying on the ground, there wasn’t enough space in the emergency department and they were struggling to deal with the influx they were seeing.”
“The situation is really dire at the moment, we have been facing one of the toughest escalations as Palestinians in Gaza.”
This fundraiser seeks to provide essential relief to the people of Gaza via Medical Aid for Palestinians, which provides immediate medical services, essential medicines, and equipment to Palestinian hospitals (https://www.map.org.uk).
Even before this escalation, Gaza’s beleaguered health system was struggling to cope, with 48% of essential medicines and 26% of medical disposables either completely unavailable or in critically short supply.
MAP’s team on the ground in Gaza are responding to the emergency situation amid rapidly escalating violence, and are working to ensure hospitals and emergency responders have the supplies they need to cope with an unprecedented influx of casualties. They also plan to provide blankets, hygiene kits and mattresses to support those displaced from their homes.
Please note that donations will not be tax deductible. However, if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please consider donating to Olive Kids, which offers financial aid, healthcare, education, and other support to children living in Palestine (https://olivekids.org.au).
We have communicated with Medical Aid for Palestinians to ensure that all funds will be directed toward projects in Gaza. Proof of remittance will be made publicly available. If we exceed our initial target, we will continue distributing funds accordingly.
Please donate whatever you can to help support the people of Gaza.
The organisers of this fundraiser live, work, and organise on stolen and unceded land in so-called Australia. We, as Palestinians, recognise our responsibility to resist and dismantle settler colonialism everywhere, both here and in Palestine. This is, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
Update (25/08/22): Thank you so much to everyone who chipped into the Gaza emergency aid fundraiser! Together, we raised a total of $3984.21 AUD (after GoFundMe fees), which will support Medical Aid for Palestinians' zero stock project. This project will get essential medicines and medical disposables that have run out to hospitals in Gaza.
Update (09/10/23): This fundraiser has re-commenced in response to the indiscriminate aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Please give generously to support essential humanitarian aid in Palestine.
