Megan and her family need your help!
Back in 2014, Megan was a full time student, graduating from UMSL with a psychology degree, started dating her friend Donny and was ready to start the life she had worked hard for. In March 2014, Megan received news that would change her life forever. They had found a lump in her breast and told her those three words that no one ever wants to hear, “you have cancer.” It feels like a punch in the gut and nothing can truly prepare you for the weight of it all. There is nothing that can prepare you for your picture perfect dreams falling apart.
Megan underwent a double mastectomy, had eggs harvested and started aggressive chemotherapy immediately afterwards. She remained in school as a full time student and graduated all while getting treatment. Megan is a fighter, so she fought hard, and in October 2014 Megan was CANCER FREE. She was so excited to move on with her life. She graduated college, bought a house with her boyfriend and landed an amazing job.
Unfortunately, in October 2015, when Megan went in for her yearly checkup, she received bad news, her cancer was back. She was devastated, finding out that she now has to fight a battle she thought she had already won. They just couldn’t believe this was happening AGAIN. She endured more aggressive chemotherapy treatments, stayed strong, still worked full time and she BEAT CANCER AGAIN!
Megan married the love of her life, Donny, on November 12,2016. They couldn’t wait to put all the bad behind them, move forward, and start a family. Megan’s doctors, at this time, do not recommend her carrying a child, so her amazing sister came forward and offered to surrogate for her and Donny. They decided to spend their wedding money on thawing out Megan’s eggs. Being a mother is something Megan always wanted to be, she was so excited to finally have something good happen to her. In December 2016, they thawed Megan’s eggs out and were so excited. Well, another blow to the gut. Unfortunately, none of her eggs had made it. This was the hardest news to hear. After all she has been through this just broke her heart.
Megan went back to her fertility doctor and they did some blood work and performed an ultra sound and she received some good news. She has 4-5 eggs this cycle and the doctor seemed very optimistic because she is so young. To do an IVF cycle, Megan would need to be off her medication for 1 month, which her oncologist said that would not be an issue. Then, they found out how much it costs. Her fertility doctor said it costs $14,000 and they need all of the money up front before they start any procedures.
As you can imagine, medical bills had piled up from the first time she was diagnosed and now she has even more, which has been very overwhelming for her and her family. She has not shared her story with many because she was already dealing with so much she didn’t want more attention coming her way at that time, so she tried to deal with it privately. Throughout this entire misfortune, she has held her head up high and has not asked anyone for help. Many loved ones have finally convinced her that it is time to suck up her pride and let people help her. Putting her story out there could maybe help someone who is going through a similar situation.
