Gil Morrison Memorial Scholarship
Donation protected
The Gil Morrison Memorial Scholarship was established in 2018 after Gil's passing in January 2017. Because of the generosity of family, friends, community members, former students, and people across the country, two (2) scholarships are awarded annually to Sandwich High School seniors who are pursuing further education. Applicants are evaluated anonymously by a committee of educators based on GPA, financial need, as well as involvement in school and community activities.
Gil worked in education for 34 years at Sandwich Schools. He taught Language Arts, Social Studies, and the Challenge program, as well as coached sports, speech team, and directed plays. In addition, from 2003-2012, he served at the county and state level as the Regional Superintendent of DeKalb County.
The scholarship is also partially funded by the Gil Pickle, an annual summer community event held at the Sandwich Fair Grounds. It is a day of fun, food, beverages, games and music for all ages. Starting in 2017, the majority of the money raised went to the scholarship. Another recent fundraising event was a family holiday play entitled "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" at the Sandwich Opera House in Sandwich, IL on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.
We greatly appreciate the time, passion, and generosity already donated by so many people. We hope to continue this scholarship annually to support students with furthering their education! Visit us on Facebook for more information!
