Urgent Help Needed to Prevent Eviction

First, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for taking the time to read our message. If you find it in your heart to help, please know that we are eternally grateful.

The reason why we're asking for help is because we are facing an unjust eviction and are desperately trying to keep our home. My family has lived in this apartment for over 30 years, and despite numerous challenges—from property damage caused by the owner's negligence to an unfair eviction in the past—we’ve fought well and hard to maintain our home. All we wish is to have a stable, worry-free life. Life, however, tends to have its challenges waiting for you around the corner.

Recently, we received a letter stating that we owe rent arrears and must pay a substantial amount within 30 days or give up ownership and vacate the apartment in the first week of December. The letter however was dated on the beginning of November but was not mailed until three weeks later. On top of that the amount claimed is incorrect.

We sought assistance from legal aid but, they informed us that while they understood the situation, they could not intervene until the case moved forward in court. This means they would only be able to help once the eviction process is underway—after the locks have been changed and we are out on the street.

Our hardship began last year when my mother broke her arm and wrist on Christmas Day. I became her primary caregiver, attending medical appointments and physical therapy with her, which led to the loss of my job. I did everything I could but struggled to find work and unfortunately certain finances, including rent, fell behind.

Since then, I have secured a job and have been working tirelessly to catch up on our finances in a timely manner. However, the letter claims we owe four months of rent. To be transparent, I am only two months behind.

Despite my best efforts, I’ve struggled to stay current on bills due to limited work hours, and I’ve not been able to fully catch up. I do not however owe as much as they're claiming - around $5k.

We are asking for help to cover the last two months of rent. Your assistance would allow us to resolve this issue, pay the correct amount owed and avoid losing our home unfairly. We are committed to staying on track, but with December approaching, the balance will only continue to rise, making it even more difficult to manage. The main issues we face is the eviction notice, the incorrect amount being demanded, and the time we were robbed of to resolve this matter.

Your support would provide much-needed relief, allowing us to stay on track, settle the correct amount owed, and preserve our home.

Once again, thank you for your time, consideration, and any support you may be able to offer. We send our warmest wishes for a happy holiday season to you and your loved ones.
