XiaoHei’s Rehabilitation Programme
Donation protected
XiaoHei is a paralysed miniature poodle that was found in China dumped in a cardboard box in 2019. He was extremely reactive and scared and when examined at a veterinary clinic, it was discovered why….. His spine was completely broken and underneath his matted fur were massive wounds on his buttocks, right down to the bone.
XiaoHei had multiple surgeries and had to have his wounds cleaned on a daily basis. The dedication of his rescue team in China - Harbin SHS Animal Rescue, and the vets helped heal this broken pup and he was soon able to use a wheelchair and move to the rescue’s safehouse where he became adept at using a wheelchair.
Earlier this year XiaoHei stood up by himself, despite his broken back and years of paralysis….. he managed to stand up on his own and eat his dinner!!!
It was decided that he needed Western intervention to give him the best chance possible and arrangements were made for him to fly to Northern Ireland and into foster care with myself. XiaoHei was initially examined and had X-rays taken at Lurgan Vets before being referred for specialist orthopaedic review at Earlswood Veterinary Referral Hospital in Belfast. CT scans confirmed that the break was so severe that surgery was not an option.
XiaoHei received a new wheelchair and a few sessions of hydrotherapy were organised to improve the strength of his forelimbs. After two sessions, he started to stand and take a couple of steps and it was decided to send him for specialist physiotherapy and holistic treatment.
XiaoHei is now under the expert care of the team at Holistic Pet Vet Rehab and Pain Management and continues to get stronger with each weekly treatment. He receives underwater treadmill therapy, acupuncture, therapeutic laser therapy and physiotherapy. In addition to this he attends hydrotherapy twice a week at Aqua Dog Hydrotherapy Rehabilitation Centre.
XiaoHei is gaining muscle mass and now able to stand strong and move both legs for a few steps and it is hoped he will continue to thrive with further treatment.
From having the worst start in life, XiaoHei has beat the odds to survive and deserves this second chance. Your help towards the cost of this treatment would be so much appreciated.
