Hi, my name is Taeya Moore, and I'm here to share my story. These past couple of years have been tough for my family and me. My brother, Devin, has undergone his third open-heart surgery and is beginning his high school career. Myself, I graduated a year early from high school and began looking for schools in hopes of starting college early. Yet, none of us would’ve expected to live in our current situation.
Since Covid and the quarantine, my family has faced many problems. Starting with the excessive drinking that my mother would begin. Every day my brother and I would get home from school and we would find her passed out, almost unresponsive. My brother, dad, and I begged her to get help for months and months. However, we slowly began to face the consequences of her drinking, as my dad could not afford all of our bills alone. Eventually, after a major setback, our mother decided to seek help in a nearby rehabilitation center. She was gone for 30 days.
When our mother returned, she was a whole new person, in both good and bad ways. The first week back, she began splurging on unnecessary purchases. Meanwhile, we barely had food in the house. Sadly, after just four short days, our mother ended up removing herself from our household to pursue her new life elsewhere, with no responsibilities for her bills or taking care of us. With her, she took the car that my brother and I shared to get to school and work, and left her broken down car in an inoperable condition. Though devastated, my father continued to work extremely hard, taking all the hours he could get to afford everything on his own. Now, our mother has been gone for months, and things are starting to catch up with us.
All of us are beginning to burn out mentally and physically, working many hours, just to live paycheck to paycheck and still not able to afford everything. My brother started his sophomore year of high school taking on a job in order to help my dad. I work a full-time job, hoping to help my father afford all of our living expenses. My dad and I have spent all of our savings trying to support the household; but we desperately need help. My father is not the type of man to ask for help, but I see that he truly needs it, and I cannot bear to watch him suffer. I appreciate the time that you all took to read our story, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time out of your day to do so.
