Support the Winters Family
Hello! We are Adam and Christina Winters. We have been married for 10 years, are in our mid-30's, and we are both teachers. Adam teaches music and Christina teaches 4th grade. We both recently took new positions at 2 separate school districts.
The Backstory
In June 2020, Adam went for a follow up with his pulmonologist for what we thought was asthma. His doctor ordered a CT scan which revealed that his left lung was blocked by a growing mass. Since then he's gone through several tests and procedures, including two bronchoscopies, a biopsy, PET scans, and several other tests.
On Tuesday, August 11 we got the results of his biopsy back. Adam has a carcinoid tumor growing at the base of the airway just above his left lung. The tumor has constricted around the pulmonary artery to his left lung so it is only receiving 8% of the blood flow. As a result, his entire left lung will need to be removed.
The surgery to remove his left lung will happen on August 31. Adam will spend 3 to 5 days in the hospital and then he will need 6 to 8 weeks to recover at home. During this time, Adam will not be able to teach. He does not qualify for disability or have any sick leave with his new school. As a result, we will be losing half of our income for over 2 months. Adam is currently utilizing Cobra insurance which is just over $360 a month.
We will be meeting with the oncologist soon to determine if Adam will need chemotherapy, radiation, or any other "maintenance" treatments after surgery. It is unknown if this will require additional time off from work.
How You Can Help
We need help to financially make it through these coming months. Adam's out of pocket max on his insurance plan is $7,350. We have already paid over $2,700 of that and there are many more medical bills to come. Between the mounting medical bills and losing Adam's income for at least 2 months, we have a challenging road ahead of us.
We are so appreciative of any help and support you can give. Thank you for the love, support, and prayers during this difficult time!
