Bar Open, live music venue & bar needs a hand

Bar Open, iconic Fitzroy Live Music Venue, is asking for your support.
For the last 22 years, Bar Open has been an integral piece of Melbourne’s live music scene, a rite of passage and platform for many emerging bands and artists that have gone onto become household names and headline festivals internationally. Bands as diverse as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The Bombay Royale, Clare Bowditch, The Woohoo Revue, Vulgargrad, Kylie Auldist’s Heavy Earth, The Hoodangers, Frank Yamma, The Horns of Leroy, Holy Serpent, Bucket Rider, The Presets, Lamine Sonko & The African Intelligence, Pugsley Buzzard, Blue King Brown, Blue Juice, Brown Hornet, Coloured Stone, The Barons of Tang and The Spazzys have all played in the intimate band room upstairs or the aquarium-style front bar, drawing music lovers in from the street. It’s also the home of the Make it Up Club—The longest-running improvised music night in the world, and the infamous Slow Grind Fever. Our commitment to the Live Music art form is demonstrated by our consistent staging and self-funding of free gigs alongside ticketed shows since we opened!
OUR FIGHT FOR LIVE MUSIC
When you love something, you want to protect it, fiercely. So we got stuck into the fight to protect Melbourne’s live music scene from decimation on multiple occasions. Over our existence, we poured our voice, bolshie passion and expertise to the many campaigns to keep Live Music in Victoria healthy and aberrant, which has led to real change that we are all so proud of today.
A COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS & LOVERS
Beyond all this, Bar Open is simply a place for Melbournians and its visitors to gather. Sometimes, it is a place of refuge, from the banalities of life or to do the crossword in peace, but always, we are there for connection—with kind, interesting, passionate people from all walks of life. Most people have a Bar Open story, and like many community spaces, it is where great friendships, communities and lifelong love affairs have been built.
WE NEED YOU!
But the hard truth is, as a small live music venue, Bar Open has been struggling to cover costs, even before the pandemic struck.
This is why we are humbly reaching out to our wider community.
The simple fact is: when that opportunity comes, we need funds to kick-start live music under the reduced capacity as a result of social distancing regulations. There are so many operating costs beyond JobKeeper that we will need to cover. All funds we receive will be used for Bar Open to get operating and its live music program out of hibernation and in front of an audience. Bands are dying to play. Punters are dying to see bands. We're dying to facilitate that and we need people like you to save this beating heart of old Brunswick St.
To show our appreciation we have created a list of rewards. Please let us know when you make your contribution. Please remember Victorian liquor licensing laws and health regulations apply.
