The Majestic Theatre has been a cornerstone of entertainment in the Gunnison Valley for nearly 30 years. Due to high rent costs and being unable to operate during a pandemic, the Majestic was forced to close its doors for good in September 2020.

How do you measure the impact of a single movie theatre? Do you remember you the first movie you ever saw on the big screen? Maybe it was at the Majestic? Do you remember your first date to the movies? How many movies have you left feeling renewed, inspired, or changed? Movie theaters are a space for people to think and be present, or to escape reality, or to gain independence, or to bring families together, to eat popcorn, to laugh, to cry, to feel, to learn. The Majestic is the only movie theatre in a 2 hour radius of Crested Butte.

We don't want to lose our movie theater because of COVID-19! We are Carrie, Conrad, and Whitney, former employees of the Majestic Theatre aka Children of the Popcorn. We have spent the past year figuring out how we are going to save this magical theater we are lucky to have in our little town.

We have a goal of $300,000 to cover 6 months of rent and operating costs, along with some anticipated maintenance we will need to do before reopening.

**We are going to do our absolute best to re-open with whatever amount of money we raise. If for some reason, we are unable to re-open, all donations will be returned! (GoFundMe can do that very easily!)

Once we have raised the money, we hope to re-open the Majestic as a non-profit movie theater. From our research, this is how most small town theaters are surviving. Three Bryn Mawr Film Institute surveys from 2008 - 2010 found that three-quarters of American small movie theaters are non-profits. As a non-profit, we hope to secure grants and government funding so that we have less reliance on the Hollywood movie market, and more opportunity to host films and events that are important to our community. We will also be able to solicit the support of our community so that if we lose money showing a film— since studios can demand such a deep cut of our profits—we can still exist to screen more films that our community wants or needs to see.

We will convert one of the three theaters into an event theater. Two theaters will continue to show Blockbuster films on a daily basis, just as we were operating before. The third theatre will be available to rent out any time we are open. This will increase our ability to host private parties and community events such as birthday parties, staff parties, renting the theatre to play video games, karaoke nights, or town council meetings. We will partner with local business and organizations to make the Majestic even more of an asset to our community. Some examples of this include partnering with Matchstick to show their films, working with Mikey's Pizza to offer more food options, hosting sober nights for GVSAPP, or collaborating on a fundraiser or event for one of the many amazing other non-profits in our valley.

Thanks and hopefully we will all be eating butter-drenched popcorn soon!
