Mike Legg's Medical Fund

On May 31st 2015 we were all gathered together in a little hospital room to find out the results of an MRI on our dad, Mike Legg.  Yvette was sitting beside him, holding his hand, as the Doctor walked in to give us the devastating news.  Mike had lung cancer that had spread to his brain.  Without treatment he had six weeks, and with radiation and chemo, they were hopeful for six to eight months.

All I could think of was, how has this happened?  Mike is healthy!  Even sitting in the hospital bed with his funny gown on, he looked capable of anything.  I watched Yvette fight to maintain control over her emotions, knowing she was facing, for a second time, the loss of her much loved husband.  Cancer had taken her first husband, and more recently, her mother.  She is one of the strongest women I know, but how could she possibly take any more?

The faces in the room were frozen in grief.  Only Mike was able to respond to the Doctor, keeping his sense of humor, holding all of us together.  This is the type of husband and father Mike is.  He cares more about his family than himself, and even being told that he was dying wasn’t going to keep him from taking care of us.

Mike’s sense of humor has never once faded as he almost immediately began the ten treatments of radiation on his brain to shrink the tumors.  The doctors wanted to begin chemotherapy as soon as radiation was complete.  We have seen the horror of chemotherapy and none of us want Mike to go through the nine week course of poison.  We want his remaining time with us to be as healthy as possible, and that’s why we began looking for other options.

Over the next week we heard about an alternative treatment in Mexico that was getting better results than conventional treatments in America, and with good quality of life.  We sent Mike’s medical records to a hospital in Tijuana called Oasis of Hope.  They quickly gave an alternative treatment plan for Mike that they felt will not just give him months, but years.  Even if they aren’t successful in giving us more time with Mike, their treatments have minimal side effects, so Mike won’t be sick over the course of treatments.  They would begin with a three week course of treatments in hospital, sending him home for 12 weeks of oral therapy, and then returning to the hospital for six days, where they will reevaluate the cancer.  We have had a family meeting and, and since Mike’s in agreement, we have begun to prepare for him and Yvette to be in Mexico by June 27th 2015.

We don’t have time to wait for money to be raised, but because of the generosity of family members giving loans, we don’t have to.  Mike and Yvette would never ask anyone for money in this way, but all of his kids want to make sure they are not left with mountains of debt when this is over.  We are asking our friends and family to help us make this extremely difficult time a little easier, by removing the financial burden they will acquire doing these treatments.  We all feel God has His hand on this choice we have made.  We know not to expect a cure, but if we can have Mike with us a little longer, or have him enjoy the time he has left with us, then this will all be worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and if you feel led to give to Mike and Yvette, we greatly appreciate it.  If you aren’t able to give money, then please remember us in your prayers, asking that God’s will be done in Mike and Yvette’s life.  May God bless you!
