Vet Bills

Hello,

My name is Darcy and I just adopted a beautiful pup that I’ve named Beau. When I first met Beau, we instantly fell in love and I knew he was going to be my best friend. Before meeting him, I was told he had a condition called Mega Esophagus. Dogs with this condition need to be fed certain food consistencies and sit in a Bailey chair for their meals.

The owner of the rescue was super understanding of me buying a condo and not getting possession until mid June. She offered to continue housing him with her and I take him on the weekends until I get my apartment. Every weekend I took him, he was throwing up consistently and it was very clear he was not being fed properly/not watched around other animals kibble food. This can cause something called Aspiration Pneumonia which can be fatal to animals. Every time I brought it up, it seemed brushed off.

Going back to May 24th, I picked him up after work and he had a massive wound on his leg. When I asked about it all I got back was “oh sorry I didn’t even notice!” … if beau was being fed properly, it would have been noticed. I noticed it right away. As the night went on, I could tell that the wound was bothering him, it was hot and looked very infected. When I asked the rescues about taking him to the vet, I was told it wasn’t an emergency and to put polysporn on it. As the night went on it kept getting worse, so I took him to a vet that was open until 11. Turns out my dog actually needed soft tissue repair on his leg. This visit didn’t go as planned as he aspirated during sedation which meant he needed to go to an emergency vet over night. He had fluid in his lungs, which can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Leaving the next day I was consistently praised by the vet by doing the right thing taking him in, and that his wound could have gotten really infected, and his lungs could have gotten worse. This ended up costing me $1500.00 that I knew right away the rescue wouldn’t pay for considering the lack of caring. That’s okay, I was more than willing to take the money loss in this case because Beau deserves the best care out there.

After this, I knew right away I was not going to take him back there. Unfortunately my current landlord doesn’t allow animals, so I’ve been displaced between my families homes in order to continue to protect my dog until we get our home in June.

Since may 24th, I’ve been consistent in asking for adoption papers, medical records confirming his diagnosis of Mega Esophageas, chip change etc. I’ve been ghosted, my questions have been ignored and looked over. I’ve gotten a vet record here and there. Until June 5th. I receive a vet visit dated April 29th 2024

He went and got a full blood panel done along with radiographs (to diagnose ME) two days before meeting me.
They let the owner of the Rescue know that Beau is getting a referral to go to Boreal Vet to get further testing done to confirm the ME and to get an x ray of his upper GI tract. (He showed tons of inflammation in his body so they wanted to rule this all out) it states in the records that the owner CANCELLED the follow up appointment with that vet and never went to Borrel for the referral to confirm everything.

He needs to also get his back bottom molar extracted, however the vet wanted to have the referral done with Borrel Vet first and figure all that out before pulling out his tooth. (Most likely because he needs to be intubated)

It also states in the medical records that he was rescued at a young age, which I knew… however he was adopted out (I wasn’t told that) and also was returned back to the rescue as the owner who adopted him could not care for him, and that he came back to the rescue “throwing up 20x per day”……. Then in January he “got hit by a car” when he lived at a foster home. I was told by the owner of the rescue that he got ME by being hit by the car.

So not only were they not feeding him properly during the weeks they had him before I never took him back, the super infected cut he had that I picked him up with that ended up costing us $1500…. I’ve been lied to about his entire life, his weight(I told them my condo regulations), his medical history and the list just goes on.

I’m absolutely devastated that I was lied to this much and that a dog who hasn’t been properly diagnosed/made better to be healthy was even up for adoption… (they shouldn’t have even had him up for adoption till all of this was ruled out) Im now stuck paying for this referral to get this all ruled out when it should be on them
however, since they lied to me stating it was a confirmed vet diagnosis and canceled all follow up vet visits the day that I met her…. It shows that this rescue is NOT caring for any animals in their care, and that they need to be looked into.

Im now looking at funding more money for an initial meet with my vet, followed by x rays to confirm diagnosis of ME. If it turns out not to be ME, then they need to run more tests to see why he is showing tons of inflammation all over his body. I also need to pay for him to be intubated in order to get his back bottom molar extracted as well.

This is all completely unexpected and completely complicated as the rescue should of paid for all of this and made Beau healthy/fixed up and have a confirmed diagnosis before even putting him up for adoption.

I put my goal at $4000.00 and if it doesn’t have to be that much, then that’s great! The extra money will go towards building him a new Bailey Chair. The one the rescue gave me is too big for him. If there is money available after that, I’ll be more than willing to look into something for dogs who have special needs.

So this is my story. I’m feeling taken advantage of. I’m feeling overwhelmed with the costs this has costed me and will now cost me more. Beau is the sweetest boy. I love him so much and I know he loves me too. He looks at me like I’ve saved him and he is attached to my hip. He’s been easy to train and has been so loved by my family. He deserves the best.
