Hi, I'm Dev - I identify as trans masculine and use they/them pronouns. I'm a tattoo artist in downtown Tacoma, with a focus on trauma-informed tattoo and serving primarily LGBTQ+ clients.
My practice has been shut down due to COVID since mid-March, affecting my income and means for gender-affirming surgery. After receiving multiple inquiries from my community, wanting to show their support, I opted to make this campaign.
Gender dysphoria has played a massive negative role in my mental health, and binding has recently taken a toll on my physical health as well, causing serious back injury. Top surgery is something I've always known I wanted, and this year, has become something I need.
At the beginning of 2020, I started the process of seeking out top surgery, which is procedure not covered by my insurance. Paying out of pocket, I opted to have my procedure done by Dr. Javad Sajan. Recently, my surgery date was set for 01/20/2021, with payment due at my pre-op on 12/30/2020. Here are the costs involved:
$8,500 for the operation
$450 for supplies including pain-management medication, a compression binder, scar tape, and healing lotions
I also anticipate needing additional funds for recovery and living expenses while out of work with no supplemental income. That being said, my primary need is for the surgery itself - any additional money raised will go toward these secondary expenses.
I am so grateful to have already raised $1300 through art sales, and plan on continuing to make this an alternative option for those interested in supporting my fundraising who also want art. I will also be making prints via Instagram (@big.clam) for all donations over $20. Please reach out if you donated and are interested in a print!
