Here's our story,
My wife and I are both on our second marriage, we wanted so badly to have a child together. She has three children and this would be my first child. After four miscarrages we went to a fertility clinic for testing. We were told that "it would take a miracle for us to have a child and that we would keep miscarring". We gave up, but to our surprise five months later Tamara was pregnant. Daily we were just waiting to miscarry. Each week that went by gave us a glimer of hope. At ten weeks we had a genetics screening test with a 99% accuracy. We were told that we were going to have a healthy little boy! We began to plan and named him after both of our fathers. Tamara's late father "Steven" and my families carried on name "James" which he would be a fourth generation. As days went on we started preparing for his arrival. Even got him his first Christmas ornament with his name on it.
All doubts were fading away as we got further and further along we were getting extremely excited thinking this was actually happening. At the twenty week anatomy scan we were told that everything was looking normal and fine, except the doctor saw a cyst on the umbilical cord but not to worry. But to be on the safe side our doctor sent us to see a specialist just for precautionary measures. At this point we weren't that worried since everything had been going well and earlier tests were all good. But little did I know at the next appointment that it was going to be one of the worst days of my life. We had a team of doctors come in and explain that there were more problems they were seeing along with the cyst. They also found cysts on his brain and holes in his heart. They strongly recommend we do more testing right away. So we did.
A week before Christmas we got the dreadful call with his results. They confirmed he has a rare fatal diagnosis called Trisomy 18. Unfortunately most babies don't make it to birth, if they do, they have a 5% chance to see their first birthday. Because these babies have so many medical abnormalities the doctors gave us a choice; Termination or seeing this through. We decided the only choice is to see this through and embrace what life our son has. We were devastated but knew this was the right and only choice to make.
Now we are at thirty weeks, and after seeing several specialist. If he makes it to birth, their prediction is we may have minutes to a few days to spend time loving our new beautiful son.
It has been recommended that we start to make plans for his burial services. To our surprise even an infants funeral cost thousands of dollars. The burial and services have to be paid upfront. With the unpredicted future we just don't have access to that kind of money along with predicted NICU services and out of pocket medical expenses we are asking for your help and support.
Please help us make Steven James Bean's funeral special and memorable.
Thank you and God Bless
