Help Joy Support Her Sister's Fight To Heal!

Donation protected
Hello, I’m Sharon.  I’m a patient of Joy Hewitt Kind.

As many of you already know, Joy is a talented and gracious Acupuncturist and Health Practitioner.  More so, she is a stoic, humble, generous woman who is spreads kindness and happiness to all she encounters.  She gives so much of herself without asking for anything in return.  She is pure….Joy.

I recently learned though that Joy is going through one of the hardest and most painful times in her life, which I have explained below.  I decided to create this Go Fund Me account to show support and give back to a woman who has given so much to us and the world.

What Happened and Is Still Happening:

Joy has a sister, Gay, who lives in Rochester NY.  As the only sisters in the family, they have a very close bond.  Both are single, so they are each other’s primary support and advocates in life.  If you have a sibling, you know how significant and important that bond can be, no matter the physical distance.

However, that physical distance has recently put an unexpected financial and emotional strain on Joy.

Reason being, this past February, Gay was experiencing painful and serious side effects from her extensive cancer radiation treatment she had years ago.  Her small intestine was being choked off due to all the adhesions in her abdomen.  This required immediate and major surgery.  As a caring sister, power of attorney and Gay’s sole caregiver, Joy flew out to support Gay through the surgery.  Gay was only expected to be in the hospital for a few days, however that turned into 2 months due to serious complications and the need for continued medical treatment.  Gay had developed two fistulas.  As a result, she endures excruciating medical treatments every few hours as well as being restricted from having any food or water (only IV fluid and nutrients) while they work to repair the damage.  Although Joy had only planned on being out there a week or so, she remained by her sister’s hospital bed for 2 months before returning home to work in order to pay her next rent bill.

Joy did not want to leave her side because she was and is still is the only person allowed to visit Gay and the only one who can advocate for her!  Apparently Gay does not like to ask for help or bother people, so it is Joy who must advocate for more pain medicine, the best treatment plan, and her overall care.

It is now October, and Gay's condition is getting worse.  She has been in the hospital ever since February, except for 5 weeks when she was attempting to heal at home (which did not work so she was re-admitted).  During this time, Joy has done all she can financially to make enough money to cover her monthly expenses and return to her sister’s side as soon as possible.  She has had to fly out 3 times so far and will need to go back at least 3 more times as they prepare for yet another surgery and difficult healing process.

For those of you who have been a patient in the hospital, you know how very important it is to have a patient advocate by your side and how comforting it is to also have a family member with you.

Joy’s Dilemma and The Reason for This Go Fund Me:

Just imagine……having to unexpectedly come up with enough money to purchase several last-minute flights, remote transportation, food, lodging and medical equipment/needs so you can go care for a sibling who badly needs you.  Then add to that the idea of owning your own business and having to solely cover your company’s costly monthly overhead since you do not have a business partner to step in for you during a family emergency.   What would you do? If you cannot go because you do not have the funds, imagine the weight on your shoulders and heavy heart you would feel.
Tough, scary, emotionally heart wrenching, right?!   I completely agree.

Joy has used all her savings and taken out loans to pay for her travel expenses thus far.  Their step-mother has contributed what she could, and  several of her patients have also graciously pre-paid for services well into the next year in order to offer their support.  However, that means no additional funds will be coming in from those patients till next year. To add to that, Joy provides a lot of sliding scale and pro bono work to patients who are in need.  I can see how she will have trouble covering her upcoming expenses, not to mention any additional travel needed to care for her sister.

I am hopeful the money we raise for her will allow her to keep her business afloat, cover her monthly overhead and allow her to care for her sister during this tough time.

How YOU Can Help:

1)      Send positive energy and positive thoughts of healing to Gay.  She is not allowed other visitors due to being in such critical condition, but your thoughts and energy will be felt no less.

2)      Consider donating to this fund.  No amount is too small, and everything will make a difference!

3)      Share this fund with as many people as you can in hopes to spread the word. Just copy and paste this link: ___________________________.
