Bananageddon The Film

We're a group of ecologists, trying to change the way consumers think about where our food comes from. 

Bananas are going extinct.  Our favorite fruit is disappearing, even as we can still buy them in grocery stores, because the way they are grown is unsustainable.  For years, corporations that grow bananas have tried to bury this problem under millions of pounds of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but most experts agree that this system has only about 10 years left.  And then ... no bananas.  

Unless we change the system.  Around the world, there are small banana producers growing new varieites of bananas in diverse agroforestry systems, where nature is incorporated and food is grown sustainably.

You might be surprised to learn that just 1.5¢ for every $1 spent on bananas makes it into the hands of the workers who labor in Central America to produce the fruit that we so easily (and cheaply) pick up at the grocery store.

Our film will focus on small producers in Costa Rica who are producing bananas in these alternative ways.  We hope to tell the story about how we as consumers can support these small producers and bring their products to North America and Europe.

Your contribution will go towards the costs of producing Bananageddon. These are essential to the project, as they will allow us to visit producers of new banana varieties and film the footage we need to tell our story. 




We are a multi-cultural team of mostly first time film makers! Brought together by our ambition to explore and find solutions to the banana crisis, we all have backgrounds in Ecology and Conservation.  We believe that story telling can be a huge driver for change, and we want to reconnect you with the journey your banana has taken to reach you.
