In the Spring of 2012, Ronald Pierce went in for a routine colonoscopy. The results were earth shattering. "Ron", as he is known to family and friends, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. He had immediate surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, but some of the tumor was remaining. He underwent chemotherapy as a treatment for the cancer, and after many months of medical treatment, was only able to return to his career as an insurance agent, part time.
Ron Pierce is a loving husband to Paula Corkin-Pierce, father to Jarroed and Aireka Pierce, and grandfather to Zach. He also has two more grandchildren (twins) on the way in coming months.
After his diagnoses, his wife Paula was forced to leave her job due to constant migraines and stress. As a result, this happy couple lost their health insurance. She has been out of work for 2 1/2 years due to blockage that has caused the migraines.
So not only was Ron's income cut in half, they lost half of their income all together. The cost of privatized healthcare can be a huge burden. As if that wasn't enough of a monetary burden, Ron got some bad news after a PET scan at the beginning of June.
Ron immediately had to have a second surgery to remove a tumor on the outside of his small bowel. It has since been learned that the tumor metastisized into his lymph nodes. They will soon find out the stage of this current tumor and growth. Ron's oncologist has suggested that he go outside of the area to get a second opinion on the outlook of his diagnoses. As you can imagine, this can be hard when you are already struggling with medical needs.
