Jayme Fenton's Medical Fund

My name is Carol Fenton Buck.  I am here because I need to raise money to help my brother, Jayme Fenton, pay his medical expenses.

Jayme became ill in March.  He tried to keep it to himself as he had never been sick in his life.  Never had to go to the doctor, and never missed a day of work at his job.  But things started to get worse and he wasn't feeling any better.    He finally couldn't take the pain anymore and went to the Emergency Room and they admitted him into the hospital.  He was in North Vista Hospital in Las Vegas for 4 days.  They did a CT scan and discovered an absess on his colon.  They inserted a drain and sent him home.  With the drain!!  The doctor who inserted the drain told him to come back to his office in about a week and they would check to see if there was any fluid still draining.  Apparently it had stopped draining so they pulled the drain out.  Put a piece of gauze on it and told him that he needed to follow up with his primary care provider as the doctor who helped him in  the hospital didn't accept his insurance.

They also told him he could go ahead eat like normal again.  Mind you, they never really fixed the problem.  Jayme still felt the blockage.  He knew if he ate it wasn't going to go anywhere so he didn't eat.  He went to his appointment with his primary care doctor and that doctor told him he was referring him to a general surgeon as he needed surgery to fix the problem. This is when he began the waiting game of getting an appointement for a consult with a surgeon.  One who would accept his stupid insurance.   Jayme was a healthy 220 pounds and dropping weight quickly from not being able to eat.  He was becoming very concerned.  Also the hole that was left from the drain they put in continuously leaked and he had to wipe it constantly.

On June 6th we spoke to him and told him we wished he could come to NY and go to a doctor here.  He finally agreed.  He had still not heard from his insurance about an appointment for a consult.  He was beginning think  he might die.  He was getting weaker and losing more weight as the days passed.  We made him an appointment with Dr. Edward Lee at Albany Medical Center.  His consult appointment was June 15th.  Now our biggest fear was if he was going to be strong enough to make the flight.  He arrived here in Albany on June 12th.  When we first saw him we were completely shocked.  How could this be our brother?  He was a very weak ,frail man, half the man he use to be.  He literally looked like an 80 year old man.  Very malnutritioned and in a good deal of pain.  I cannot seem to get that image out of my head.  How could the health care system in Las Vegas not help this man and let him suffer like this??  We knew then that we were lucky he was able to make the flight and had we waited any longer he might not have been strong enough to make the flight or worse we might have been going to a funeral.

He waited the weekend out, even though we wanted to take him to the emergency room. He wanted to wait for Dr. Lee.  He didn't want anyone else to admit him.  We all went to his appointment.  He weighed in at 138 pounds.  Flesh and bones.  And a weak, broken man.  He was so afraid, had no trust in the healthcare system.  Dr. Lee admitted him into the hospital that day.  He and his team of doctors all could not believe the condition he was in.  And could not believe he had suffered like this.  He hadn't ate in 3 months, because he couldn't.  It wasn't going to go anywhere.

Dr. Lee and his amazing team got him strong and helped him to learn to trust them.  They started him on TPN and started getting him strong enough to make it through surgery.  His surgery was June 23rd.  By that day he had already gained 7 pounds and knew he could trust these people to save his life.  The nurses were so good to him as well as Dr. Lee and his team of doctors.  He went into surgery  knowing that he was going to have to have part of his colon removed.  Also knowing that he may end up with a "bag" for the rest of his life.  His surgery was about 1 hour and 45 minutes.  Dr. Lee came to tell us that he was out of surgery.  Told us he wasn't able to do it laprascopically, he had to do an open surgery.  He told us he was a "mess" in there.  He removed a foot of his colon an and was able to put him back together without having to give him a "bag".  We knew how thrilled Jayme would be.  Dr. Lee is an amazing person.  He saved our brother's life!!

Jayme found out about 2 days prior to his surgery that his wonderful insurance had denied a prior authorization.  Meaning, none of this would be covered by his insurance.  He went into surgery knowing that this man was going to save his life and would have to figure out what to do about the mounting medical bills later.  He has been in the hospital for 14 days and counting.  He is anxiously awaiting his discharge day, which he was told could be in the next day or two.

So I am hoping to help ease some of his stress so he can continue to get stronger and get back to being the man we all know and love.  I am hoping to help raise some money to help pay his medical bills.  The healthcare system in Las Vegas failed him so we had no choice but to step in and get him help.  And Dr. Lee and the amazing staff at Albany Medical Center have given him a second chance at life.  Albany Medical Center's motto is "Every day saving lives,  Giving people HOPE!  So if you can find it in your heart to help my brother we would be forever grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.  May God Bless you and your families too.  We are blessed.  Our brother is ALIVE!!
