Democracy is Essential Legal Fighting Fund

The NSW Govt and police have made protests of over 20 people illegal, using the excuse of COVID-19 restrictions, while no such restrictions apply to a vast array of other activities. We support health measures to combat the Coronavirus, but the ban on protests cannot be justified on health grounds. We therefore call for protests to be exempted from the NSW public health orders.

This fundraiser is organised by one of the protesters recently arrested at an outdoor, COVID-safe rally at Sydney University against job cuts and university fee increases, on behalf of the Restore the Right to Protest in NSW - Democracy is Essential campaign. Please donate to our legal fighting fund, to support the campaign and help us build a war chest to support any protesters who may be arrested or face fines.

As we campaign for the right to protest, we may face legal challenges, arrests, court costs and fines along the way. This fund is a way of supporting those activists, and giving people confidence that they will have some financial support from the campaign should they end up in this situation.

All funds raised will go towards supporting protesters' legal costs.
Any extra funds left over will be donated to progressive activist campaigns in NSW.
