Yang Yang’s surgery needs

Hello, my name is John Burton, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend two weeks with, the family of Yang Yang and to meet with their surgeon in December 2022. Yang Yang lives in a rural area in the Philippines. I have known their family for two years now and wanted to help. Yang Yang has a severe cleft palate. My concerns were, her being bullied when she attends school, and her lack of ability to develop important verbal communication.

And her family’s inability to pay for this type of procedure, required by their surgeon.

I did meet with her surgeon and the result of the meeting was Yang Yang needed a specialist, and one surgeon to do all three surgeries, and will need a speech therapist. The consulting surgeon determined her condition was too severe for him to attempt the surgeries, and referred her to a specialist in Cebu that has better Pediatric facilities.

Most children need only two surgeries; due to the severity of her condition she will require three. First one to join her lips properly, second to start the repair to her palate, third surgery to complete this process due to the severity of her condition. What we are asking is for Yang Yang to get the first surgery started as soon as possible.

The family is heart broken because these surgeries will cost more money than they could afford. But the need for the surgery is critical for her speech development at this time in her life. She should be talking now but can’t form words properly due to the severe cleft palate.
