"Shoe That Grows" For Tigray
Donation protected
Hi there! I'm Megan, a UBC student currently doing an internship in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. My main focus is on the health and nutrition of mothers and children, as better health outcomes improve livelihoods for all. So far, I've visited several different villages and observed that a major problem for young children is a lack of shoes. How are shoes and health connected, you may be wondering? Children who wear proper footwear are less susceptible to parasitic infections and other diseases transmitted through soil. For example, roundworms and hookworms can enter the body through the exposed foot. Both of these types are prevalent where there is inadequate sanitation; much like what I've noticed from my visits to rural villages. Nematode infections in young children can cause a host of additional health problems, such as severe anemia and diarrheal disease. Recently, I discovered a great campaign called Shoe That Grows. This durable leather shoe actually grows with the child, and is adjustable up to five sizes. I'd like to raise the equivalent of $1,500 USD to buy 100 Shoe That Grows for a village in need in the Tigray region. I'm really passionate about this cause, so I need your help! Today, we are bombarded with campaigns for development and petitions to raise money for a variety of causes. A lot of the time, we don't know exactly where this money is going. If you donate to me, I pledge to keep you updated on the progress of my fundraising campaign, so you know exactly how your dollars are being spent. I'm currently on the order waitlist with the Shoe That Grows company, so as soon as more shoes become available, I will place my order and hopefully make the future a bit brighter for 100 children in need. Thank you!
