A Fight for Survival
For over three years, Thom Kearl has bravely battled COVID-19 and its severe effects on his body and mind. Thom, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor and community member, has faced numerous health challenges, culminating in the need for a double lung transplant and open heart bypass surgery. Although his health insurance covers much of the cost, his out-of-pocket expenses are expected to reach $67,000. We are reaching out to our friends, family, and community to help Thom and his wife Nanette navigate this challenging time and secure the life-saving transplant Thom urgently needs.
Thom's Journey with COVID-19
Initial Diagnosis and Hospitalization
Thom’s fight against COVID-19 began just before his 59th birthday on January 11, 2021, when he started feeling unwell. By January 15, his health had worsened, leading to his admission to the hospital. The following day, he was transferred to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah; the start of a long and arduous medical journey.
Intensive Care and Ventilation
Thom underwent numerous standard and innovative treatments to combat the virus. On January 21, 2021, he was intubated and placed on a ventilator, marking a critical phase in his battle. The virus led to severe complications, including additional viral and bacterial pneumonias, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), bacterial bladder infections, and stopped bowels. Thom also suffered from atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, liver and kidney problems, high blood pressure, delirium, and many other illnesses during his prolonged ICU stay. Through the grace of God, after many days, weeks and months on a ventilator, Thom began breathing on his own and was eventually released from the hospital. However, his life since then has been far from normal.
The Need for a Lung Transplant
By mid-February 2023, Thom's doctors faced a critical decision. Given the severity of his COVID pneumonia and its many complications, Thom’s lungs had sustained extensive damage with significant areas of necrosis and scarring. Thom was officially diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a mostly fatal and progressive condition. After careful evaluation, it was determined that a double lung transplant was Thom's only chance for survival. The middle of May, Thom was given final approval for the procedure at the Norton Thoracic Hospital, in Phoenix, AZ.
A Family Man and Community Pillar
Thom's fight for survival is deeply rooted in his love for his family and community. As the youngest of seven children, a devoted father of four, and a proud grandfather of four, Thom's family is his greatest joy. He has also been a welcoming host to foreign exchange students, creating lasting bonds across cultures.
Known for his infectious laugh, memorable dad jokes, and unique handshakes, Thom has touched the lives of many in his community. His passion for helping others is evident through his extensive church and community service, including coaching Little League teams, serving as a Cub Master, and supporting school musicals. Thom’s ability to see the potential in everyone he meets and his unwavering support for the underdog have made him a cherished figure in his neighborhood.
The Road Ahead
The double lung transplant is Thom’s best chance to regain his health and return to the life he loves. Given the permanent and progressive lung damage to his lungs which has already resulted in severely reduced pulmonary function, the transplant is critical. Despite being bound to a wheelchair and tethered to an oxygen concentrator 24/7, Thom’s lungs cannot provide his body with enough oxygen to sustain life; the pending transplant is his only real chance for survival.
The transplant process is complex and demanding. Thom has already undergone extensive preoperative evaluations. Once a suitable donor is found, he will spend approximately three months in the hospital, followed by intensive postoperative care. This includes rehabilitation to help his body adapt to the new lungs, ongoing medical monitoring, and medications to prevent rejection and manage his overall health.
Financial Burden
While health insurance covers a significant portion of the transplant costs, the out-of-pocket expenses are substantial. The estimated $67,000 will cover various critical needs, including:
Travel and Accommodation: Thom and Nanette need to travel from their home and family in Salt Lake City, to the Norton Thoracic Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, and stay nearby for an extended period during the surgery and recovery process.
Post-Operative Care: This includes rehabilitation, medications, and regular follow-up appointments to monitor Thom's progress and ensure his body accepts the new lungs.
Uncovered Medical Expenses: Even with insurance, many costs are not fully covered, including deductibles, certain medications, therapies, and potential complications.
