I am the mom of a wonderful young woman, Brittany Elizabeth Eastman. She is the mom of two sweet children of her own. She began having issues with not feeling well in the spring of 2015. As a busy mom of two young children she kept putting off going to the doctor, assuming that she was tired from taking care of her family and working. In December Brittany fell at home and went to the ER to get checked out. When she arrived at the hospital her temperature was over 103 degrees. The local hospital ran tests and determined that she needed her gall bladder removed. The surgery was scheduled as outpatient surgery that should have taken about 35 minutes. After 3 1/2 hours, the doctor let us know that when he did the surgery to remove the gall bladder her liver was so large that he pierced it by mistake. He also told us her spleen was extremely enlarged. She had lost a lot of blood. He found large discolored lymph nodes that he removed. That was the beginning of a horrible nightmare that no mom would ever want to watch her daughter endure.
Immediately after the surgery Brittany began having severe health problems. She has been in several hospitals for over 3 months. She has had specialists from across the United States and around the world trying to figure out what is wrong with her. None of these specialists can figure out a diagnosis. Each doctor tells her that she is a rare case and they just cannot figure it out. She is extremely sick. Her lymphatic system has completely shut down. Her body is collecting fluid in the abdominal cavity. They drain from 2-7 liters of fluid from her cavity weekly. Her tissue wall in the abdominal area is between 3-5 inches thick. Her bowels and intestines are grossley enlarged from fluid retention. She is in severe pain. Her liver, spleen and fluid are pushing her rib cage and the pelvic area. The doctors CANNOT stop the fluid and other problems stemming from what is happening to her. She has been told that this is a chronic illness and they believe she will live the rest of her life this way. As far as they know, there has never been another case like hers in the United States and they don't have any answers. The doctors are treating her symptoms without a diagnosis. They have tried many medications and will continue to do so with her as an outpatient. Complications from this are to be expected so there may be random hospital stays and scares. Each day there seems to be another health problem that arises - her heart rate is too high; she has high fevers; her blood is too thin; her veins are inflamed. Her body cannot continue to function as it should. We keep praying that a doctor will discover what is causing her illness.
Brittany takes 17 prescriptions and 38 pills a day. She has to travel at least twice a week to see doctors who are 1 1/2 hours away from her home. She can no longer work and needs financial assistance to pay for medications and travel.
I have moved in with Brittany to help take care of her and her children. She is the light of my life and I want desperately to make sure that she has a good quality of life and spends as much time as possible with her children.
We would never have made it this far without the love, support and prayers of family and friends. Please continue to keep Brittany and her family in your prayers. We know the power of prayer can provide miracles and we need a miracle. Thank you all for helping my child.
