Breast cancer treatment
My sister, Lauren, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has been through some rough times in the past few years with job loss, heart attack, loss of her car, foreclosure of her home and so much more. This diagnosis is the roughest in every aspect. She was slowly getting back on her feet. Although it barely covers her rent and living expenses, she has a job. Her hopes to get a car are no more. Every appointment is time off work. Every time she walks into an office, it is $75. It is $1500 after insurance to have the chemotherapy port placed. She had to sign financing paperwork for them to deduct from her work check every month because she does not have the money. Because of her previous heart attack, she required clearance which meant extra tests. Her labs suggested poor renal function which required extra tests. Once the port goes in, the chemotherapy starts and there is a copay for each that she was told would be $150 to $300. Once she completes chemotherapy, they plan to do surgery to remove any remaining tumor and lymph nodes. There are plans to monitor her heart and other functions throughout. At this moment, I do not know the full expense of everything but it is overwhelming at this level and only just beginning. I hope to use funds from here to cover her medical bills, the copays, medications, and pay her rent.
UPDATE: At this moment, Lauren is in the hospital having a port placed to begin chemotherapy next week. We are still waiting on final word on the copay per chemotherapy treatment. The insurance has refused to approve her oncologist's recommendations which has caused some delay. The original numbers I mistakenly thought were $150-300 are actually $300-1500.
