MSC Transgender Accommodations
Donation protected
On March 3rd it came to light that Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket Rhode Island had updated their student handbook with the provision "Mount Saint Charles Academy is unable to make accommodations for transgender students. Therefore, MSC does not accept transgender students nor is MSC able to continue to enroll students who identify as transgender."
Within 72 hours a petition had gained over 1400 signatures, a protest had been held during their entrance exam, and multiple news outlets had covered the issue.
It is my belief that 1) Mount did not include this provision intentionally out of exclusion or hate 2) The public's opinion has been heard, and 3) MSC is working on fixing this policy as we speak.
Students at MSC are taught acceptance, love, and service (among many other things). It was these values Mount instilled in us that led to the rapid organization against this new policy.
However, Mount also taught us understanding and forgiveness.
I think we owe it to Mount to provide not only feedback against this policy, but also a solution. That is why I have created this GoFundMe page.
I propose that we put our money where our mouth is and help raise funds to:
1) Designate areas of locker rooms that are safe for transgender students
2) Designate safe bathrooms for transgender students to use
3) Develop policies that will educate faculty on the LGBTQ+ movement
4) Add transgender students to the same protected class that people of all races, religions, and sexual orientations are already included in.
This issue has already been brought to light. Let’s unite to provide an actionable solution that will show the world what Mount and its Mounties are all about, and allow MSC to continue providing quality education to all.
