Yessi's bike accident recovery fund
Donation protected
Friends and family of Yessi Alexander,
As some of you may know, on September 30th of last year, Yessi was riding her bike to work and was struck by a van that went through a red light in NYC, suffering a severe concussion (despite wearing a bike helmet).
Since then she's struggled with getting her life back in order and we recently learned why: she has Severe Post-Concussion Syndrome (www.healthline.com/health/post-concussion-syndrome ). Severe PCS has symptoms similar to cases of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) made famous by NFL athletes, except CTE is degenerative over time whereas PCS resolves completely for most patients. But this takes time. It can take years for some patients to feel normal again.
Three months after the accident
Yessi still has a host problems that don't allow her to work: daily migraines, fatigue, amnesia, disorientation, mental confusion, nausea, sleep disturbances, irritability, mild depression, ringing in the ears, and sensitivity to light. She also has lingering pain in her knee, shoulder, and lower back from being hit by the van.
Yessi is in good care with a medical group specializing in accidents such as hers. They are just uncovering the extent of the damage done to her body and brain. Her treatment has no end in sight at this moment but usual cases of PCS heal within a year.
Why create a GoFundMe?
Because Yessi has been unable to work since the accident. On top of that, she has now has gone through all her resources to pay for her treatment. She needs help.
In order for Yessi to continue coverage of medical bills and appointments, she needs her community to make donations in whatever amount you can afford. We chose GoFundMe because it offers some of the lowest fees available for this kind thing—she'll get at least 96% of your donation. She hopes to pay back each donation over time unless specified not to. If you can't afford to make a donation, consider simply sharing with friends and on social media. And please note: Yessi will get your contribution whether or not the goal is met. You can also send her the money directly via Venmo or something like it if you'd prefer.
Together we can help someone who in an instant would do the same for us. Let me know if I can answer any questions: [email redacted]. Thanks and be well.
- Brad (Yessi's brother)
Also: not feeling well for such a long time has been really isolating for her. If you have a moment I know she would appreciate some love. [email redacted]
