As I said when I started this Crowd Funder last week, everyone in the Northern Isles knows someone who Alistair has helped. A lot of those people have made donations this week, and a heartfelt thanks from me (and Alistair) for that)
During the election he made a mistake which the SNP has blown out of all proportion. The Election petition which he is fighting is nothing more than a ruthless attempt to eliminate any remaining opposition to the SNP in Scotland.
Many people out there know that this challenge is baseless, but Alistair must defend it regardless.
The costs of his defence are considerable and 100% of the money raised will go towards this. I will transfer the money as Alistair directs, to his solicitors. Not a penny is retained for me or for overhead. It all goes to help pay his costs (which I now understand are likely to be closer to £80k than £50k.)
I started this fundraiser to help Alistair raise the funds required for his defence. As a Lib Dem activist, I've known Alistair since he was 16, having first met him at Scottish Conference when he was a wee YL. We keep in touch regularly. Winning this ridiculous case has been the least of his worries - paying for it has been. Don’t be fooled by baseless claims and attacks. Alistair must find the money to pay for this case. The liability is his and his alone.
