Young Women's Leadership Development in Ghana

Hello to all who believe in the power of young women,

The short version:

My name is Abigail Haresign, and I began fundraising in August of 2023 for a trip to Ghana, West Africa in which I and connected the Ghana Girl Guide Association with Heritage Academy to build a sustainable leadership programs for girls and teachers through the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. During my time in Ghana, I participated in community connections supporting the Girls Guides in their work both in the capital of Accra and at Heritage Academy (2.5 hrs from Accra) where I introduced and assisted in implementing Girl Guiding. While I was there I also led a teacher development program for the Educators at Heritage Academy (a k-12 school). During the three days I was able to be there in person and get the guide unit up and running we were able to take a trip to Kakum National Park to walk across the hanging canopy bridges as well as have a nice closing ceremony on the beach. Since then our Girl Guide Leaders at the school have had two opportunities to travel to the National Training Center which also serves as one of the 5 Girl Scout World Centers. The Girl Guides have been able to travel to the National Training Center to participate in World Thinking Day (an international Girl Scout celebration) where they partook in activities to practice problem solving environmental issues, made new friends, and visited the capital of their country for the very first time.

We are currently in the works planning for future adventures for them and ways for them to continue to develop their relationship with the National Training Center and the International Girl Scouts so that they can have lifelong experiences and opportunities like future internships, jobs, and leadership development. I will be sharing more details soon.
