Youth Powerlifting in Springfield

Donation protected
My name is Russell Loper and I have been a volunteer coach for various youth sports for close to 20 years.  My current volunteer efforts are as an assistant football coach and head powerlifting coach in Springfield. I also compete in the sport of powerlifting as a lifter in the Master division age group (currently 55-59).  I am using the GoFundMe platform to raise money for youth (boys and girls) powerlifting in Springfield.

Everyone knows about youth football, baseball and basketball, but communities, especially smaller communities, get saturated with fundraisers for these teams.  This makes fundraising for a much lesser-known sport such as powerlifting a huge challenge.  I am hoping that this GoFundMe effort can help reach beyond Springfield for support, as well as increase awareness of the sport.

Now let’s answer a couple of key questions…

What is Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is an individual sport in which competitors attempt to lift as much weight as possible for one repetition in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.  Lifters are placed into a specific division and weight class.

Competitions (Meets) are normally all-day events that begin with the squat, progress to the bench press, and conclude with the deadlift. Every lifter is allowed three attempts at each lift, for a total of nine competition attempts throughout the day.

Three officials serve as judges and collectively decide whether or not an attempt is considered “good” or “bad.” Each judge’s decision is represented by a panel of red and white lights (white indicating a “good” attempt and red indicating a “bad” attempt) displayed after each attempt. Two or three white lights signify a “good” attempt while two or three red lights signify a “bad” attempt.

At the end of the meet, awards are presented to the top three lifters with the highest total within their division/weight class. A lifter's total is determined by the sum of their highest “good” attempt in each of the three lifts.
