Yesterday we were told the worse news a French bulldog owner could hear. Lucy lost mobility of her back legs an ability to urinate on her own. Right now, she is currently deep pain negative which means her case is severe. She has a 50% chance of regaining mobility if we proceed with surgery. Knowing that an MRI is required prior to surgery, we knew that this was going to be a costly surgery. Lucy stayed over night and was monitored to see if she was going to exhibit signs of myelomalacia (which is fatal and has no known cure or treatment). We got the call the morning that her condition has not worsened but she is stressed. My wife and I are proud people and have always had that “roll up your sleeves” kind of attitude. We are grasping at straws to give our girl her best fighting chance to have a happy life. We are even looking at assets to sell, so coming to the public for help is truly our last resort. MRI and surgery has been estimated $7,000-$8,000 (not including any potential risks or interferences). Our next best option if we can not do surgery is a clinical trial that is $2,000-$3,000. But of course, it is a trial so there are no firm statistics and not her best chance.
My wife’s comfort show has always been ‘I Love Lucy’. Much like Lucy Ricardo, OUR Lucy also shares her wacky antics lighting up a room with laughter. As we do not have children, our dogs and cat are our family. Particularly for my wife, Lucy is her emotional support animal. They have a bond that I have yet to seen in a pet/owner relationship before. We love her deeply, we know she is strong willed and as her parents we want to give her the best fighting chance.
Thank you for reading.
