In an attempt to unbuild the systems that are made to hold back artists that identify as minority, I would like to present the opportunity to raise money for artists to experience and create work with full autonomy.
#letsmakeshithappen allows for great, mediocre and shit work a like to coexist and be created by artists, recognising that people should be given the opportunity to express themselves without having to achieve any cookie cutter or conditioned expectation of what "good" is.
It's also in response the art worlds excessive talk about what constitutes as quality or fundable work. Shit work needs to exist and there seems to be no institutions in the UK that allow that time for play, experimentation or failure (which ultimately leads to success) to be apart of the minority narrative. Rather than relying on the institutions which are inherently capitalist, patriarchal and racist, this provides a fresh alternative to make more stories and opportunities visible, by asking the art community to actually invest in itself and create an ecology/economy that could be sustainable. You never know what could come from this and thats the joy :)
I came up with this project because it's my dream to be a philanthropist. I don't have the means yet to give to and help others as much as I would like to, so I'm hoping I can start the practice of philanthropy in order to give back to the arts.
I will choose 4 artists, each receiving £10,000 to start and make a project of their desire. I will not supply them with any preconceived product. Often funding bodies bypass the access needs of minority groups, equating to a never ending rapid disparity and decrease in the number of independent arts able to live and make work within and outside those communities. The reason I have chosen £10,000 is because I am currently self funding a solo project and I've probably spent more than that in total. It really isn't easy to get anything off the ground without a substantial amount of money.
The remaining £10,000 will go back into making shit happen. I will create a pack of resources(books, podcasts, interviews, literature, articles), workshops, keynotes and panels with a team of artists working across the arts to enable the 4 artists with tools to actually make their shit happen. They may not have always had any/or the best opportunities, education or finances in order to make any shit happen (if they have then they should continue to be supported and be given the chance to evaluate and develop their practices). I have 5 years of professional experience in Dance, Performance, Visual Art, Film, and Writing, working internationally, independently and collaboratively with a large pool of artists. I believe that there's different ways to unbuild patriarchy, racism, sexism, ablism and other type of phobia or oppression within the arts. Maybe the entire world can copy :)
I really believe that with enough help and support, I can raise this huge amount money and create some change. If you feel the same, please share, give frivolously and help to create better opportunities for all artists alike.
Let's actually make shit happen rather than just chatting about it :)
