The Velasquez Family

This is Elsa Colopy, family friend to the Velasquez family. Amos Velasquez is a beloved coach and teacher at Colorado Springs Christian High School and his bride is an active PTO member and devoted mom to Jace (Junior), Myles (6th grade), Judah (4th grade) and Gabby (3rd grade). Amos has had some serious health issues over the last few weeks. He landed in the ER at the beginning of the month with severe pain in his abdomen. The diagnosis was diverticulitis, but he was not getting any better. His coloring was off and he had no energy. Jenifer fought for a referral to a gastroenterologist and they were able to get in Monday afternoon for a Tuesday appointment. The Dr. did not like what he saw and got Amos in for a colonoscopy immediately. That was done Thursday, the 21st. The Dr. found a mass on his colon and diagnosed him with stage 4 colon cancer. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday and had surgery on Friday. The surgery was more complex than anticipated and took 6.5 hours to complete. They removed his small intestine and 12 - 18 inches of his colon. None of his other organs were affected and there was good blood flow to the area. The entire mass was removed and was the size of a large cantaloupe. They removed multiple lymph nodes as well. Chemo will come after he is healed up from the surgery.
