Get a Wheelchair
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Milda, I sustained an injury to which amputation is now the plan and I am aiming to fundraise to be able to get a wheelchair for myself to be able to live my life again!
A suitable wheelchair cost starts at 1.7k - which makes them so inaccessible, which is what has informed the goal to be able to ensure I have the minimum I need to function atleast.
Challenge: I will be attempting to crutch, wheel and swim 168km across August and September as that is how many days it has now been since I lost the ability to walk.
Story: I am 24 and am a newly qualified nurse and have been an athlete my whole life being an avid netballer and more recently boxer.
I sustained an injury in Jan 2024 trying out a new sport - bouldering - and unfortunately this has not only not improved, but deteriorated to a point where amputation is the plan going forward. I have not been able to walk since then despite ongoing physiotherapy and treatment.
I am a newly qualified nurse (graduating a few days after my injury!) and work full time with children in eating disorders. I was also previously working on general wards such as surgical and medical wards at the local hospital but due to my leg unable to currently do this - which I am keen to do again one day. Despite continuing to work full time as a nurse I am struggling to afford my rent. Until I am fitted with a prosthetic, my ward nursing career is over!
I was fortunate enough to have a temporary wheelchair initially however this is not practical day to day and using crutches often leaves me immobile due to the pain it causes and the amount of blistering on my hands. Being able to get a wheelchair that fits me would allow me to have some of my life back and adapt to being disabled.
