Yvandy Rigby, an exemplary young man by most measures, has a chance to make a better life for himself and to become the first male in his family’s history to gain a college education, but he needs a little help getting to the first step on his path.
He was accepted into the Milford Academy, a post-graduate preparatory school steeped in history, where he will play on its elite Division 1 level post-graduate football team. From there it is expected he will be a top recruit and will be a scholarship athlete at a premier 4-year college and football program.
But his path has not been without obstacles, including the one is facing him now. So, we are asking your help in investing in his future by contributing to his educational fund.
Yvandy and his family arrived in the United States in 2014-2015 from his home country of Turks and Caicos, leaving behind a rather tumultuous upbringing. After he was settled in our public schools, it became evident he was struggling academically, and it was uncovered he had a learning disability. His classes were adjusted and supports were put in place, and he began to make a turn in his grades. Around this time he also began participating in football and track for the first time, and even as a novice, it became evident he was a student-athlete who had potential for collegiate athletics.
During this period, he was experiencing difficulties with his guardian and was living in less-than-ideal conditions. Between irregular meals and imperfect sleeping arrangements, it is astounding he was able to keep his positive outlook and to accomplish what he was accomplishing. As he headed into the spring of his junior year, his living conditions continued to get worse. Eventually, his guardian moved and essentially kicked him out of the home. His bags thrown on the street, he was homeless and had to figure out where to go for a night’s sleep and a meal.
Once he secured temporary housing, he went on to step up his training over the summer to prepare for football season and his senior year. He continually displayed leadership, humor, gratitude, and perseverance, as well as hone his unique physical skill set. He avoided many of the temptations that many teens enjoy, and kept his eye on his future.
While he was helping a neighbor with some landscaping work, he began talking with her about his struggles in school. Upon learning she was a teacher, with specializations in reading disabilities, he asked for her help in improving his reading skills. Not many other teenagers would seek out additional academic support on their own, but Yvandy is an especially driven young man and wanted to better prepare himself for college-admission testing such as the SAT.
His initial SAT scores were not at the level required for college acceptance, but he did not get discouraged. He continued to put in hard work with the tutor, sometimes up to four days a week, in addition to his regular schoolwork and athletics. He has since brought up his SAT score to a qualifying level, but he still had work to do to improve his GPA.
He attended a post-graduate semester at the Milford Academy, in order to bring his academics up, and received a full scholarship offer at Temple University, where he is now enrolled.
Here is a young man who leads by example and who is internally driven to be better each day in all of his endeavors, and to improve the world around him.
He just needed that chance and still has bills to pay off at Milford.
Please consider donating to his educational fund to help him fund his tuition and room/board costs at Milford Academy.
Thank you!
