A Helmet for Harper
Donation protected
This is Harper Marie Sheriff. She was born on December 21st 2014 and was in the NICU for 4 months. She was diagnosed with VACTERL association and has had 7 surgical procedures to date, with more in the immediate future. She has had open heart surgery, a procedure to widen her nostrils as she couldn't breathe, a procedure to connect her esophagus to her stomach, a procedure to give her a colostomy to bypass her imperforate anus, a feeding tube placement and two esophageal dilations. Thankfully, insurance has covered her bills so far. But they refuse to cover an orthotic helmet, which will help reshape her head. Because she was in the hospital for so long on her back in bed, the back of her head is flat, called brachycephaly.
Harper needs this helmet to help her to progress with her normal milestones such as rolling over, sitting up and to help her with the stiffness in her neck and shoulders. West Texas Rehabilitation Center is asking for $600 for a down payment with $150 payments monthly. On a Staff Sergeant's pay, that is unreasonable and unaffordable. We have appealed to the insurance companies, sent letters of medical necessity, and to no avail.
We don't usually ask for help. We know that other people are busy, and strapped for cash themselves. But this can open up a new avenue for Harper's treatment. If you can spare anything, please think about giving it to help out Harper. Any extra money that is raised will be donated to Cook Children's Medical Center and West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
