Scott Sappington Jr. was a beloved son, friend, and student of Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences. In the late summer of 2008, Scott’s life was shockingly taken by gun violence right before his senior year began. While the tragedy devastated his family, friends, and the community, the class of 2009 sought peace and unity in keeping Scott’s memory alive by planting a tree on the front lawn of Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Scott influenced many during his short time on earth.  He was a role model for his community and participated in a number of service opportunities. His sense of humor was one that brightened the cloudiest of days and his smile was contagious. He was a dedicated and loyal friend and student.

Scott had already made plans to attend Kansas State University prior to beginning senior year. He was college bound, working against the stereotype of young Black men in America. Scott knew he lived for a purpose higher than his own.  A leader has nothing to do with position and everything to do with ability to influence others and ability to persevere through difficult circumstances.  His optimistic actions inspired others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more.

The Scott Sappington Jr. Memorial Book Scholarship has now been established to help college-bound seniors continue their educational dreams since Scott was not allowed the same opportunity.
